Introduction: The Zenith El Primero El Primero. A movement and a watch. Or rather, a whole family of watches. And contrary to its moniker, Zenith's El Primero movement wasn't actually the first automatic chronograph calibre to market (that title went to Seiko).

The history of the El Primero watch. Created in 1969, the Zenith El Primero watch is the first chronograph with automatic winding, with 36,000 vibrations per hour. In 1975 the Zenith Radio Corporation, owner of the trademark for 4 years, decided to stop the manufacture of mechanical watches and restrict its production to only quartz watches.

At the end of the day, the Zenith El Primero Striking Tenth is a fantastic looking and performing watch with great wrist presence, legitimate sex appeal, limited availability, and potentially historic importance as the watch that re-ignited Zenith, all for under $11,000. This is a proper wrist-comfort sweetheart at 38mm with a 46mm lug-to-lug. "Goldilocks" is the word. It's perhaps one of the sweetest iterations of the El Primero movement, being hand-wound and thin. Due to the lack of a rotor, the case is a mere 11mm thick. And, like many mid-'90s pieces, this Zenith is now back in fashion.
